Rankin Inlet at a Glance
Today the second largest community in Nunavut,
Rankin Inlet (Kangiqiniq in its native tongue) is a key government, transportation,
and communications hub for the people of this unique area of Canada. Located on
the west coast of Hudson Bay,
Rankin Inlet has developed a strong fishing, and Inuit craft industry, and founded
an extensive tour and adventure enterprise, all after struggling with the collapse
of the Nickel Mine on which it was originally established, which is a testament
to the resilience of the native Inuit people. Exceptionally rewarding to explore,
but hardly easy to get around, the landscapes of this area are full of expansive
ice fields and flower-filled tundra, yet the access is primarily via air
since the entire region has just 21 km (13.5 mi) of highway. With its cultural
ties and incredible history passed on through art, song, and storytelling, the
people of Rankin Inlet will ensure a fascinating travel experience.
